Easter in Greece!

Traditions
On Good Thursday we dye eggs...
   homemade easter egg dye

and bake cookies and "tsourekia"...

On Good Friday -late afternoon- we follow the Epitaph around the town...

...village or island...

On Saturday night just before midnight we go to church holding candles
to celebrate the Rising of Jesus Christ...

then we carry the holly flame to our homes...

we clink eggs...

sit around the decorated Easter table...

and enjoy a delicious dinner with "mageiritsa"
(a soup made of lamb livers, lettuces, eggs and lemon)

And on Sunday we're celebrating all day long eating good and delicious food, clinking eggs,
dancing and drinking!

I'm taking the rest of the week off to celebrate Easter with my family!
See you on Tuesday with a new post!
HAPPY EASTER!

  13. Happy Easter! I am celebrating the Easter this week as well, and when I was reading your post, I realized how much our Easter traditions are alike. The Easter service ad midnight, is my favorite holiday service.

    "Christos Anesti!"

(One of the only Greek phrases I learned from my mom.)

Our local Greek grocer has fresh made tsourekia. Well, i think that's it. He has both the large braided loaf with the red egg in the center and little mini braids. (He gives out the mini braids to you when you are at the cashier. You always get a treat of some kind.)

In our home, we were not very traditional.
We went to church. Them made dinner - lamb-burgers, Greek potatoes and green beans. My step-son said the burgers were really good - made me happy.

Thank you for the lovely photos and for sharing your traditions.
I'll leave you with a fun scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

  27. Wow, living in Greece must be amazing! Such beautiful traditions, thanks for sharing. We love to "crack" our red eggs during Easter here too, funny how traditions are passed down, and not forgotten.
